THIS WEEK'S POP ROCK BOPS

The Ruffles – Baby Blue Bronco

The Ruffles' new single showcases sisters who are driving their way to a sun-kissed power pop gem

The Ruffles

"Baby Blue Bronco" arrives with the windows down and the harmonies stacked high. Recorded at Abbey Road's Studio Three using vintage 1960s microphones and the room's historic analogue patch-bay, the track carries a warmth that modern digital production often misses. It's also loads of fun, with the song chronicles the sisters' first car, a 2025 baby-blue Ford Bronco. But the real magic lies in how the melody interlocks over jangly guitars. It's power pop with a Beach Boys glow, built on live takes that capture their chemistry in the room.

The Ruffles are teenage sisters Kenzington, Charlotte, and Paris from Delray Beach, Florida. Music runs deep in their family, with connections to Led Zeppelin, Billy Joel, and working jazz musicians. Rather than coast on that legacy, they write their own material and play their own instruments. A recent Top Two finish at the Boca Raton Battle of the Bands adds to their growing momentum, with Nashville's Broadway dates lined up for fall. Exciting stuff, and we love where they're going.

Marion Sophia Dyrvik – Daydreamer

Marion Sophia Dyrvik's 'Daydreamer' is a gorgeous slice of 90s-kissed dream pop, all organic warmth and vocals that give you the feels

Marion Sophia Dyrvik

'Daydreamer' opens with a guitar tone that immediately places you somewhere chilled. Marion Sophia Dyrvik has crafted something unhurried here, a track that lets its acoustic textures breathe while dreamy vocals drift across the top. The Cranberries and Muse influences are there if you're looking, but she's very much in her own lane here. This one's an ethereal love song and the production stays warm throughout, but its her vocal which is the real standout here. She lands the chorus beautifully, powerful without ever pushing too hard. Stunning dream pop, mellow and deeply absorbing.

Marion Sophia Dyrvik hails from Ålesund, Norway, and her sound draws from both her Northern roots and a restless curiosity for beauty wherever she finds it. For this one she teamed up with Irish songwriter Larissa Tormey, met at a 2024 songwriting camp in Rena, and American producer Chris Del Camino, who plays every organic instrument on the track. The recording happened in a 200-year-old Finnish-style smokehouse that's been in her family for five generations, which explains a lot about the serene energy running through every note. An artist who clearly cares about the craft, and I hope there's more coming this year.

Mary Strand – Annunciation

Mary Strand's 'Annunciation' is a stunning piece of garage rock, turning grief and defiance into something urgent and vital

Mary Strand

Mary Strand opens with a gut punch. 'Annunciation' is her response to the 2025 mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church, and it does not flinch. The track builds on distorted guitars and a driving rhythm section, Mary's voice cutting through with anger that only comes from genuine heartbreak. There's no soft landing here, no polite detachment. We're right in, and the song challenges listeners to stop accepting gun violence as inevitable, particularly when it takes children. But underneath the fury there's something stubborn and bright: hope that with enough noise, enough refusal to be numb, things can actually change. And that hook in the chorus? It really works. Powerful garage rock, raw and completely uncompromising.

Mary Strand is based in Minneapolis. She spent 16 years drafting merger agreements before novels, then songwriting kicked off in 2018 at a camp hosted by Rodney Crowell. Now she records with Mary Strand and the Garage: Ryan Smith of Soul Asylum and The Melismatics on guitar, Mark Wade on bass, and her son Jack on drums. Her debut album 'Golden Girl' dropped in 2023, which we'll definitely be going to check out. A great, important single.
