THIS WEEK'S INDIE POP BOPS

Danny Lu – 我渴望 ( I Long for You)

Danny Lu's '我渴望 (I Long for You)' is a tender Mandopop gem, blending reflective folk textures with indie warmth for a deeply moving singer-songwriter debut

Danny Lu

Danny Lu really lets this onebreathe. '我渴望 (I Long for You)' opens with a gentle acoustic strum and a voice that sits close, the Mandarin lyrics given all the space they need. It's a song about the people who stay with us long after the moment passes, and it sounds exactly like that feels: warm, patient, full of small details. The arrangement is spacious, with soft rock textures threading through folk-pop melodies. And the chorus? That's where it opens up. Beautiful folk-pop songwriting, warm and deeply felt.

Danny Lu (鹿晓丹) is a Beijing-born, New York-based singer-songwriter whose work draws on the storytelling tradition of Mandarin music. He wrote this one in the high desert of Santa Fe after a journey that started in New York, then returned to finish it years later. It's his first original release, the start of sharing songs that had stayed private for a long time. An official video with Chinese and English lyrics is out now. We're really glad to have him on our radar. More of this please, Danny. A great single.

Maddox Jones – Somebody Like You ft. Gummy DJ

British indie heart meets German club pulse on a euphoric anthem that proves the biggest dance records can still be an emotional belter.

Maddox Jones

Built on pulsing four-on-the-floor kicks and shimmering arpeggiated synths, 'Somebody Like You' evolves from lovely, close intimate verses into explosive euphoric drops. The production gleams with warm atmospheric pads, balancing bright festival energy against an undercurrent of melancholy that mirrors the lyrics' central longing. The synth work is banging, but it's Maddox's vocals that shines beautifully. His emotive vocal cuts through the wall of sound, while the irresistible chorus captures that bittersweet ache of searching for connection. The accompanying video, filmed across Hamburg's streets and clubs, matches the song's blend of exhilaration and yearning.

Northampton's Maddox Jones first found success fronting The Departure, landing four UK Top 40 singles and sharing stages with The Killers and Placebo. His 2020 solo debut EP 'Headspace' hit number four on iTunes, while recent singles have topped Music Week charts. Gummy DJ brings German electronic firepower, having amassed 14 million YouTube views since 2023 with productions that fuse classic rave energy with sleek modern sonics. A real banger this one, more of it please.
