THIS WEEK'S INDIE FOLK BOPS

Sherry geary – Normal life

Sherry Geary's 'Normal Life' is a tender, unflinching indie folk single from Great Yarmouth, incredibly moving and fully realised.

Sherry geary

'Normal Life' opens with honest observation that only comes from living it. Sherry Geary writes about mothering a non-verbal, severely autistic son, and the song doesn't reach for pity or drama. It just tells the truth. The acoustic arrangement stays warm and uncluttered, giving her vocal all the room it needs to carry the weight. There's a lift around the chorus where the production opens up slightly, enough to let light in without breaking the intimacy. The melody really does stick here, and the world really lands. And the whole thing feels like it was written because it had to be. Beautiful indie folk songwriting, raw and entirely earned.

Sherry Geary is from Gorleston, just outside Great Yarmouth on the east coast of England. She's been working with the same producer for six years now, recording vocals at home before he handles mixing and mastering, and the partnership has given her a warm, distinctive sound that balances classic country storytelling with modern folk production. All proceeds from 'Normal Life' go directly to SEND group schools and charities, which tells you something about what kind of artist she is. A great single, and one that deserves to travel far.

Réna – Teach Me How To Love You

Réna's 'Teach Me How To Love You' is a tender indie folk debut, a warm meditation on love learned through presence and patience.

Réna

This one's a love letter to a dog. We love the vibe, and 'Teach Me How To Love You' builds from that premise, acoustic guitar and gentle folk-pop textures carrying lyrics about routine, patience, and the small acts that make up devotion. The melody sits warm and unhurried, giving space for the emotion underneath. There's a moment in the second verse where the vocal drops almost to a whisper, and it hits you right in the chest. Lovely indie folk songwriting, honest and entirely earned.

Réna is an Indonesian artist now based in Crailsheim, Germany, and her music draws from acoustic folk, indie pop, and soul influences. This single is the opening track from Soliloquies, an upcoming project about the many forms of love and connection. She writes from personal experience and everyday moments, and you can hear that directness in every line here. A beautiful debut, and we're excited to hear what comes next.

FRANCK – LA RENGAINE

FRANCK's 'La Rengaine' is a gorgeous French chanson that aches with memory and subtle devastation, a cinematic folk gem from Istres

FRANCK

FRANCK opens 'La Rengaine' with just strings, guitar and vocals, and that's almost all he needs. The song is built around absence: the traces relationships leave behind, the way time moves whether you're ready or not. His delivery sits somewhere between speech and melody, and I love the spoken-sung style that makes the whole thing feel conversational. The string arrangement really works, it's just enough to lift the emotional weight when it needs lifting. The arrangement stays deliberately sparse, letting the storytelling breathe. Stunning cinematic folk, tender and deeply felt.

FRANCK is a singer-songwriter from Istres in the south of France, working in the tradition of French chanson with a stripped-back, intimate approach. Earlier in his career he took second prize in a singer-songwriter competition in Marseille chaired by Jacques Veneruso, one of France's most respected composers. He stepped away from music for a number of years, and 'La Rengaine' marks his return with a more personal artistic vision. The focus is on emotion, memory and the passage of time, carried by understated arrangements that never get in the way of the words. A beautiful moment this week.

Barn and Belle – Start Again

Barn and Belle's 'Start Again' is a gorgeous Western Swing revival from Maastricht, all suitcase drums and dobro shimmer, and a lovely alt-folk single

Barn and Belle

There's an old Ford Model T in this song, and you can hear the engine turning over. 'Start Again' opens on a catchy as hell riff over swing-jazz chords, that chopped backbeat pushing hard underneath like wheels on a dirt road. The rhythm section never lets up, and that's the point: this is music for leaving, for not looking back. Barn and Belle stretch the build just long enough to make the melodic turns in the chorus feel like a lovely surprise, and the harmonies are just great. Gorgeous alt-folk songwriting, raw and completely alive.

Barn and Belle are a Dutch duo from Maastricht who've built their whole sound around what's real. No pitch correction, no AI, no digital polish. Live, they play acoustic guitar, dobro, washboard, and a repurposed suitcase they call their traveller's drum kit. For 'Start Again' and its parent record 'Safe Travels', they've expanded to a full band, the same musicians backing them on stage and in the studio. It's a proper commitment to authenticity, and we need more of that these days, right? More of this please, and we'll be keeping a close eye on what comes next.

Dave Hill Jr. – Chasing Stars

Dave Hill Jr.'s 'Chasing Stars' is a gorgeous slice of Seattle Americana, honest full-band folk songwriting that earns every note of its title track status

Dave Hill Jr.

Dave Hill Jr. came to singing late, and you can hear it in the best way. 'Chasing Stars' carries the weight of someone who spent decades listening. And this has a lovely warm, unhurried vibe with acoustic guitar and pedal steel threading through a vocal that sits cosily in between honest and raw. The vocal is almost matched by the sound of that dead 70s snare; it's magnificent. Anyway, the songcraft here is great. And it's stunning Americana songwriting, warm and deeply felt.

Dave Hill Jr. is a Seattle singer-songwriter who spent years behind the drum kit backing other people's songs before stepping up to write his own. He's also the author of Doubt Riding Shotgun. At 55, he's only been singing for four years, releasing a new track essentially every month rather than waiting for albums. His single 'Broken Down Bus' picked up press and playlist placements across 11 countries in 2026, plus radio airplay on Seattle's KBCS 91.3 and Space 101 FM. The full-length Chasing Stars is due later this year. Bring on that album, Dave. We can't wait.
