THIS WEEK'S POP BOPS

This week's pop finds its power in softness and its joy in movement. Tender, honest songwriting and warm, feel-good energy in equal measure, real emotional weight wrapped in melodies made to lift you. Press play and let it carry you.

Ruut - Unbeatable

"Unbeatable" reframes real strength as the courage to be vulnerable, and Ruut delivers it as a lovely, intimate contemporary pop gem with genuine depth.

Ruut's new single tastefully rewrites what strength means. Where "Unbeatable" once imagined the warrior as a symbol of constant courage, it now finds the real warriors in those who make room for vulnerability. And authenticity and softness, and that shift gives the song its emotional core. Co-produced with Grant Cornish and mastered by Blake Morgan, it pairs remarkable dynamics and moving melodies with ballad-like moments that build a deeply intimate atmosphere. This one's produced like a dream, and is 80s influenced pop is basically my jam. As Ruut puts it, being human is far more meaningful than appearing invincible, and you can feel that honesty in every line. Tender, dynamic and a real zinger.

Ruut is a Finnish-born, Baltimore-based artist whose story is one of real self-determination. Born in Kuopio to two Sibelius Academy students, she was playing piano by ear and writing songs by seven, later moving to Budapest and then Baltimore, singing in church in front of thousands before striking out on her own path in secular music. That relentless drive has produced a string of independent releases and a devoted following, and 2026 marks a real tipping point: a catalogue-wide signing with Meridian and the Finlandia Foundation 2026 Performer of the Year award. Impressive stuff, but it's the tune that wins the day. A striking, tender voice, and we'd love to hear more.

Stephen Webber – Here We Go

Powerhouse vocals from Zahara light up "Here We Go", a gorgeous, country-fired acoustic anthem from Stephen Webber, pure post-pandemic joy and release.

Here's a song that throws the doors wide open. "Here We Go" is a country-fried, post-pandemic acoustic anthem, and it positively bursts with that joy of stepping back into the world. What a odd time it was, and I love this take on how things opened up. Powerhouse vocalist Zahara, also known as Annette Philip, takes joins in with the fun with real fire, riding a warm, banjo arrangement that blends Americana roots with a bright, danceable pop sensibility. There's craft in every corner of it. Unsurprising given the pedigree here, but what lands hardest is the sheer feel-good energy. A total joy.

Stephen Webber is an Emmy-winning composer, Grammy-nominated producer, author and educator, and one of the genuine innovators in modern music. Appointed Professor Emeritus at Berklee in 2025, he led the effort to save and retool the iconic Power Station studios, served as an A&R consultant for Universal Music Group, and authored Turntable Technique, the first book to teach the turntable as a musical instrument. A multi-instrumentalist who's recorded and performed with everyone from Emmylou Harris to Bela Fleck, he brings all that experience to bear here without letting it crowd the song. A true polymath, but it's this little banger that shines bright this summer.
